The Washington Post Co. is preparing to launch a free news-aggregation website, part of a growing push among publishers to personalize the news-reading experience.

The service, called Trove, lets readers build their own news site based on topics they choose. Scheduled to go live next month, Trove sifts through more than 10,000 news sources and delivers articles to a personalized page using algorithms that take into account articles a person has read and personal interests. Trove apps for devices like the iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry are also in the works.

Twitter today announced a partnership with Apple that will link the new iTunes social network – called Ping – with tweets. When you interact with a song on Ping, that information – including a preview clip of the track and a link to buy and download the track – can be automatically tweeted. That way, everyone who follows you on Twitter can now give Apple $1.29 for the track, too.

Several organizations are getting involved with social in one way or another. They start with listening, then establish some engagement strategies and community management practices, and occasionally develop some corporate website integration.

But, what about everything else?

Many organizations are touching the tip of the iceberg when it comes to social. We’re still seeing a lack of processes and frameworks, integration is sparse (both from the business and technology side), and change to management and culture issues still aren’t really being addressed. Some of these...

Do you ever feel like social media is interfering with your life and your work? For example, you’re trying to work on one assignment, but you want to see who commented on your facebook post and you just got 5 emails and @ replies are pouring into your Twitter and you can’t get a song you heard on Youtube out of your head and now 3 friends are chatting online with you and….ummm what was I talking about?

A video that resonates with most people who are on the net every day, and especially ones who tap into social media sites and read blogs. Our human brain only has a certain bandwidtch...

Just last March they announced that 24 hours of video were being uploaded per hour.  At this rate, we’ll be seeing whole life spans worth of video being uploaded in minutes before you know it.

YouTube draws a picture on the company blog of just how much content 35 hours a minute works out to with some interesting analogies.  “If we were to measure that in movie terms (assuming the average Hollywood film is around 120 minutes long), 35 hours a minute is the equivalent of over 176,000 full-length Hollywood releases every week.  Another way to think about it is: if three of the...

Social Books is set to be unveiled Thursday during TEDxEast, an offshoot of the TED technology conference that is being held in downtown Manhattan. It works like most e-reading software in that users download titles to their tablet or phone. The main difference here, however, is that users are able to leave public notes on a particular book, chapter or passage, and comment on the notes left by others. They can also share their digital bookshelves with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition, users can highlight favorite parts of the book and send them out on Facebook and...

As it’s name might suggest, Network Roulette randomly connects professionals with each other over the Internet for the purpose of networking. When you start out, it asks you a few basic questions about your career and what you’re interested in. From there, it works quite like Chatroulette, but doesn’t utilize the Web cam and isn’t chock-full of graphic obscenity.

While a tool like this could never replace the experience meeting somebody in person, it does have an interesting potential to connect professionals regardless of their geographic location.

The...

When a popular rock group comes to town, some of their fans won’t get great tickets. Not enough room in the front row. Now they’re annoyed. 2% of them are angry enough to speak up or badmouth or write an angry letter.

When Disney changes a policy and offers a great new feature or benefit to the most dedicated fans, 2% of them won’t be able to use it… timing or transport or resources or whatever. They’re angry and they let the brand know it.

Do the math. Every time Apple delights 10,000 people, they hear from 200 angry customers, people who don’t...

First the bad news: If you’re going to calculate the ROI of your social media campaign, you’re going to have to know math. That may come as a disappointment to people who thought social media was only about accumulating Twitter followers or monitoring Facebook “Likes,” but it’s true. The future of social media is about math, metrics and monetization.

The problem is that most companies aren’t doing an effective job of measuring the value of their social media campaigns. In fact, a recent survey by Econsultancy found that 47% of the companies it surveyed said they were...

Sparkle’s platform for application developers allows for the location and identification of any handset, provides geofencing and messaging technology, offers support to control voice, data and SMS services for handsets, and can even detect mobile phone motion and velocity — a feature that could be used to auto-disable texting while driving, for instance.

The Sparkle platform will allow applications with geofencing technology, such as Neer, to become more readily available for iPhone and Android owners, and more practical in function. Geonotes can be automatically...
